The guide on using serums for healthy, radiant skin

To quote the words of the queen of skincare, expert Melanie Grant from her Modern Guide to Skin Health: “Serums are the hardest-working products out there, they really are where all the magic happens”.

The potency of modern serums is astounding, and the scientific research that now goes into the efficacy of serums is mind-blowing. Effective serums are packed with proven active ingredients to treat specific skin concerns as well as treating everything from breakouts to dryness.

Choosing the right formulation to yield amazing results and treat specific skin concerns can be tricky, so with the expertise of our Beauty Therapist Julia, we cover everything serums!

What are the benefits of serums?

Serums have many benefits. They can treat everything from ageing skin and acne to hyperpigmentation, and they include active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and niacinamide to help exfoliate, fight free radicals, brighten, soothe and hydrate aka drive skin results!

Because serums are thinner, results are more obvious within a shorter time. Here at Harmony, we like to get our clients on serums that contain vitamins A, B and C.

How do you use a serum?

Serums are easy to add into your routine! They are always applied prior to moisturising with the intention of delivering results before locking in moisture and sealing up the skins barrier.

You can use serums morning and night unless your serum contains protective antioxidants such as Vitamin C, it is preferred to use this during the day, however at night is fine too.

Simply place a small amount of your serum into the palm of your hand and spread it evenly between your middle and ring fingers. Then gently apply to your face starting from the centre and sweeping upwards before pressing into the skin to finish!

What are some ingredients I should look for when using?

At Harmony we always recommend having a skin analysis first to determine the very best products for your individual skin needs however some of our favourite ingredients include Stay C 50, a stable form of Vitamin C which helps regulate pigment, Niacinamide which helps regulate breakouts, Hyaluronic Acid for increased hydration and Retinol which evens out skin tone and helps tackle the effects of ageing.

What is your favourite serum at Harmony?

If we had to choose, it would have to be the B3 Plus Serum from O Cosmedics. This serum is amazing for all skin types and contains 12% Niacinamide which supports the skins immunity and lipid barrier, minimises redness and pore appearance, regulates oils, protects against sun damage and evens out skin tone, minimises fine lines, wrinkles, and breakouts. It really does it all!
