Hyaluronic Acid: The hydrating ingredient you need to know about.

The hydrating ingredient for plumped, bouncier skin

If you’ve ever experienced dryness, flaking, tightness or irritation, chances are you’ve heard of — or tried — hyaluronic acid. The ever-popular ingredient is synonymous with hydration, and has found its way into countless serums, creams, hydrators, and mists — all of which promise to give us plumped, bouncier, more hydrated skin with continued use.

From what it is to how it works, here’s everything you need to know about this skincare superstar by our Therapist Sophie.

What exactly is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is an absolute powerhouse ingredient, and something I believe every single skin needs in its life. Its main purpose is to hydrate and replenish skins integrity by increasing the water content within the layers of the skin.

We call Hyaluronic Acid a humectant, meaning that it can bind water – my favourite part is it can hold 1000x its weight in water! As we age, hyaluronic acid (a key skin substance, alongside collagen and elastin) decreases – and as a result we can lose volume, hydration, and plumpness.

What skin concerns and skin types can hyaluronic acid help with?

When it comes to types of Hyaluronic Acid, it’s important to get the right molecular weight to truly increase hydration from within.

We have this ingredient so available to us in so many products, but as a therapist it’s important I am using one that can both penetrate my client’s skin and give surface hydration too.

Hyaluronic really does suit every skin type and condition, but the skins that need this powerhouse the most in their lives are dehydrated and prematurely ageing skins, dry and irritated skins, and anyone needing to get that glow back in their lives!

As it plumps and ‘fills’ the skin, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced along with textural dryness, flakiness, and irritation.

How can I incorporate using Hyaluronic Acid into my routine?

We are so lucky to have many different ways to incorporate Hyaluronic into our client’s homecare, as we all know that no two skins are the same!

My top serum is the O Cosmedics 3D Hyaluronic Serum, as it uses an ingredient called ‘Hylasome’ – a Hyaluronate Cross Polymer penetrates the skin at different levels due to varying molecular weights, giving it the power to hold 5 TIMES the water binding capacity of the traditional Hyaluronic Acid. Apply morning and night-time on clean skin, then layer your favourite hydrator over the top.

A second favourite is the Dp Dermaceuticals HylaActive – a non-negotiable in all of our Dermapen Needling treatments, this serum uses ‘HylaFuse Complex’ in the highest concentration, but also combines the added benefits of Zinc for ultimate skin healing, and Vit B5 to promote repair and smooth the signs of environmental ageing.

This serum is great for anyone suffering from severe dehydration with irritation or redness too and is easily applied straight onto clean skin morning and night.

For a real treat – check out the Dp Dermaceuticals Hyla Active Face Mask – a perfect night-time skin saviour to instantly replenish tired dry skins (with your feet up and a hot herbal tea in front of your favourite Netflix show!).

Are there any treatments that include this ingredient that you offer in-clinic?

If you are looking for a treatment where we can get Hyaluronic delivered directly into the skin, check out our Dermapen Full Face & Neck treatment. The treatment works by stimulating new collagen and skin tissue, resulting in stronger, smoother, and younger-looking skin, and improving the look of wrinkles, pigmentation, scars, stretch marks and more.

Microneedling uses the skin’s natural healing response to light trauma to create new cell growth and total skin rejuvenation, with minimal downtime – and one of the main ingredients we use in the treatment is pure Hyla Active. We recommend a Skin Consultation with one of our therapists to find out if this treatment is right for you.

Another favourite treatment we offer is our PT Facial – You will experience a comprehensive, personalised facial tailored to your wants and your skin’s needs. Includes a no-downtime, exfoliating peel and mask targeted to your skin’s specific needs, such as hyperpigmentation, breakouts, dehydration, or signs of ageing.

We use a combination of our 3 leading skincare brands; O Cosmedics, DP Dermaceuticals and GINGER&ME to provide your skin with exactly what it needs each time you visit – including a big hit of Hyaluronic Acid in your mask, serums, and homecare products. Divine!
