5 things I’ve learnt about skincare for mature skin

With Courtney, Skin Therapist here at Harmony Skin, Beauty & Spa

We deserve healthy, glowing skin at every age. By properly caring for your skin and incorporating the right products and routine you can absolutely manage the effects of ageing.

To alleviate the confusion around skincare for mature skin, and point you in the right direction, we asked Courtney, a Skin Therapist here at Harmony to share her knowledge with you.

Tip 1. Hydration is key

When talking about mature skin, one of the biggest concerns most people have is the hydration of their skin. Providing extra moisture is critical, as many people experience an increase in dryness as their skin matures.

When skin is dry, fine lines and wrinkles become more prominent on the surface. To keep dry skin in the best condition possible, it’s important to cleanse with products that won’t zap your skin of moisture like O Cosmedics Gentle Antioxidant Cleanser or the Dp Dermaceuticals Tri Phase Cleanser. Using an exfoliator and incorporating a good hydrator such as O Cosmedics Immortal Cream will keep your skin plump and glowing.

Consider investing in products like the B3 Plus Serum or Pure Age Defiance which contain Niacinamide (vitamin B3). This ingredient will effectively plump up the skin and help it absorb and hold onto moisture. I also can’t get enough of the O Cosmedics Youth Activating Balm, a corrective serum that restores the skin’s lipid composition to that of a healthy 22-year-old!

With the careful selection of some high quality, moisture-intensive products, you can make a major difference in your skin’s trajectory.

Tip 2. Wear SPF always!

Wearing an SPF as part of your daily skincare routine is super important, to provide your skin with proper UV protection. This not only reduces the risk of pigmentation damage but the sun also ages your skin faster without protection.

Not all sunscreens are created equal, choose a sunscreen that is 30 SPF and one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. I love the O Cosmedics Mineral Pro SPF 30+, powered by 20% Zinc Oxide, Mineral Pro’s sheer, lightweight formula delivers triple defence and broad-spectrum UVA/UBA protection.

Make sure to wear your SPF rain or shine and reapply throughout the day including on top of your hands. You can often tell the age of a person by looking at their hands and neck.

Tip 3. Commit to a quality skincare routine

It’s very important to choose skincare products routine for your skin type and individual concerns. As with any skincare regime, I believe the path to well-loved mature skin starts with proper cleansing.

Exfoliating three times a week and incorporating a serum with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycol acid, or vitamin C, like the Dp Dermaceuticals Antioxidant Cocktail will work wonders as an environmental shield.

It’s also a great time to introduce, if you haven’t already, the use of retinols such as Retinal Active by Dp Dermaceuticals, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of new blood vessels and collagen. With the skin around the eyes being ultra-sensitive, I recommend using an eye cream like the Ginger&Me Quinoa Lift & Hydrate Eye Cream and always follow with a good SPF for daytime.

Getting the results you want for your skin doesn’t just happen overnight – by sticking with a personalised skincare routine designed for you, you are more likely to achieve optimum results rather than just occasionally using your products and relying on treatments in the clinic.

You achieve results quicker when using your recommended products at home daily as prescribed by a Skin Therapist.

Tip 4. A course of advanced treatments can supercharge your results

To take your skin game to the next level, at Harmony we offer a wide-range of advanced skin treatments. Our qualified Therapists will treat your individual skin concerns and provide recommendations of cosmeceutical products to complement your treatment.

This includes IPL, a laser based treatment designed to help with conditions such as pigmentation, sun damage, wrinkes, fine lines and broken capillaries or LED treatments which use wavelengths of natural light to “recharge” your skin cells within 10 to 20 minutes.

We also highly recommend Dermapen microneedling which promotes healing and natural collagen production. The treatments work to rejuvenate skin, improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and more.

Finally, chemical peels or a HydraFacial once a month, offer intense skin changing results. Based on medical strength actives, enzymes and acids, these super-charged, hydrating facial is personally tailored for you.

Tip 5. Talk to a Skin Therapist

To know where to start, or if you have a specific skin condition you want to manage, the best thing to do is pop in and chat with one of our qualified skin therapists. From here they can perform in-clinic treatments and prepare a personalised skincare routine that is best suited for your needs and budget.

At Harmony, we are passionate about all things skin and taking care of your skin long-term so you can see real and visible results.

Bonus tips for mature skin!

In addition to curating your daily routine, making careful lifestyle choices can positively impact mature skin. Consuming a balanced diet, rich in colourful whole foods, keeping up the water intake and moving the body regularly will help too. The healthier we are internally, the more this will show in our skin. That is where internal supplements can help.

The Kiki Health range of natural internal supplements are fantastic for this – my go-to products for keeping that youthful glow from this range are the Krill Oil, Marine Collagen Beauty Blend and MSM Flakes.
